عنوان انگلیسی Relationship between Medication Adherence and Ankle-Brachial Index in patients with Hypertension
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Introduction: Hypertension and its complications are one of the leading causes of death and physical disabilities nowadays. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is one of the useful indexes that can indicate vascular complications of hypertension with the ability to show vascular stenosis and the possibility of cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between medication adherence and the ABI in patients with hypertension.
Methods: In this descriptive Cross-sectional study, 250 patients with hypertension, referred to medical centers in Karaj city, were enrolled through the convenience sampling method. To collect data a demographic information questionnaire and the 8-item questionnaire of Morisky (Medication Adherence Scale; MMAS-8) were used. Also, the ABI was measured manually using an acoustic Doppler probe. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 25.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of the right-side ABI was obtained 1.055 ± 0.134, the left side ABI was 1.036 ± 0.113, and the medication adherence rate was 5.88 ± 1.74. Also, in assessing the frequency distribution of patients' medication adherence at three levels, it was found that 127 patients (50.8%) were at the low level, 68 (27.2%) at the moderate level, and only 55 (22%) at the high level. There was a direct and positive correlation between patients' medication adherence and the ABI. Also, a statistically significant difference was observed in the mean scores of the ABI at three levels of medication adherence.
Conclusion: According to the results, the rate of medication adherence was low in most patients and was directly related to the ABI so that with decreasing medication adherence, the rate of the ABI decreased. Therefore, adherence to medication regimen in patients with hypertension can be effective in preventing vascular complications.
