عنوان انگلیسی Antibacterial Effect of Pomegranate Peel Extract (Punica Granatum L.) Against Oral Pathogens
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Background & Aims: : Pomegranate is a Mediterranean medicinal plant, and a growing body of evidence has referred to its numerous pharmaceutical activities, including antifungal and antibacterial effects. The present study aimed to assess the effect of antibacterial pomegranate extract (Punica granatum L.) on bacterial infections responsible for periodontal diseases.
Materials and Methods: Pomegranate fruit was purchased from the market, and the peel was separated. After drying, it was ground into powder by a mill. The ethanolic extract of the prepared powder was obtained, and the solvent was separated from the final solution by rotary evaporation. The effect of the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration of the obtained extract on the microorganisms Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Streptococcus oralis was evaluated by the well method and using a 96-well microplate at concentrations of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 30).
Results: The ethanol extract of pomegranate skin demonstrated antibacterial effects against the pathogens used in the evaluated concentrations; the best results were at 0.2 extract concentrations. The highest antibacterial effect of the pomegranate skin extract pertained to Streptococcus sanguinis at a concentration of 0.2 mg/mL, while the lowest antibacterial effect was connected with Streptococcus mutans at a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL.
Conclusion: As evidenced by the obtained results, the compounds in pomegranate skin extract have a significant antibacterial effect against periodontal disease pathogens. Owing to their natural origin, these compounds can be used in medical applications since they lower expenses and minimize the complications associated with chemical drugs.
