عنوان انگلیسی Using hydroponic methods for the cultivation of ornamental plants while simultaneously treating the effluent from wastewater treatment plants: A case study of pothos and seven-color rose
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Background & Aims: The present study aimed to investigate the phytoremediation effect of two ornamental plants, Pothos and seven-color rose, on the removal of some pollutants from wastewater from an urban wastewater treatment plant in Mahallat city.
Materials and Methods: To conduct the present work, a pilot study was established in the Flower and Plant Village of Mahallat, Iran. Wastewater samples were collected from the urban wastewater treatment plant. A total of 12 one-year-old cuttings of seven-color roses and Pothos were prepared. An oxygen supply system was connected to all pots. The parameters of total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), electrical conductivity (EC), 5-day biological oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and nitrate (NO3-) of the effluent in the main and control pots were examined after 5, 7, and 10 days. Moreover, three pots were prepared. Two pots were filled with wastewater, and one with municipal water.
Results: The overall average removal efficiencies of BOD5, COD, TDS, TSS, EC, and NO3- for the seven-color rose were 76.81%, 25.64%, 86.70%, 14.13%, 44.52%, and 47.85%, respectively. The parameters mentioned for Pothos were 89.74%, 64.39%, 74.66%, 7.98%, 48.88%, and 87.76%, respectively, while these parameters for the control pots were 56.79%, 18.57%, 17.18%, 4.01%, 20.22%, and 50.30%, respectively.
Conclusion: Hydroponic cultivation with wastewater from the treatment plant can be used to grow flowers and plants, thereby significantly reducing the consumption of potable water.
