عنوان فارسی اسلام و تجدّد: نگاهی به رمان تروریست(۲۰۰۶) اثر جان آپدایک
چکیده فارسی مقاله تصویر مسلمانان در سیاست، رسانه‌ها، و نیز ادبیات غرب بیش و کم تصویری سیاه و سفید از مردمی است که با تمدن و تجدد و تسامح بیگانه‌اند. پس از جنگ سرد تاکنون و به ویژه از آغاز حملات تروریستی در نقاط مختلف جهان، خاصه پیامد یازده سپتامبر در آمریکا، بازنمایی مسلمانان تغییری چشمگیر را شاهد بوده است: تروریست بودن نیز به انگاره‌های بدویّت و عقب‌ماندگی افزوده شده است. این جستار به بررسی رمان تروریست(2006) اثر جان آپدایک می‌پردازد. نویسندگان برآنند نشان دهند چگونه این رمان، تحت تاثیر و همگام با گفتمان سیاسی غالب در آمریکا و غرب، اسلام را دینی خشونت‌گرا و متحجر بازنمایی می‌کند. نویسندگان شگردهای آپدایک را در معرفی اسلام به عنوان دینی متعصب، که پیروان خود را به خشونت (تروریسم) می‌خواند، می‌کاوند و استدلال می‌کنند که رویکرد جان آپدایک در این اثر شرق‌شناسانه است.

عنوان انگلیسی Islam and Modernity: A Study of John Updike's Terrorist (2006)
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله The images of Muslims in media, literature and politics have been mostly black and white portrayals of a people alien to modernity, technology, civilization and progress. Since the end of the Cold War and the onset of deadly terrorist attacks in different areas of the world, especially in the United States, these representations show a palpable difference: Muslims are predominantly represented not only as anti-modern barbarians, but also as terrorists. The present paper examines John Updike’s Terrorist (2006) as one of many American novels which, in line with the dominant political discourse, has focused on representing Muslims as ‘the others’ and Islam as a totalitarian and retrogressive religion which orders its adherents to use violence against unbelievers. The writers discuss Updike’s attempt at introducing Islam as intolerant of Western modernity and democracy (the main inspiration for the Arab-Muslim protagonist of the novel intends to carry out a terrorist attack). The aim is to show how Updike more or less subscribes to and empowers Orientalist conceptions of Islam.
