Evaluation of point-of-use drinking water treatment systems efficiency in reducing or removing physicochemical parameters and heavy metals
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله
Nowadays, many people have prepared and installed home water treatment devices, as an essential measure, to improve their health, and this device is being increasingly used. In this study, the performance of a home water treatment device in reducing or removing the physicochemical parameters [pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total hardness, and the levels of calcium, magnesium, sodium and nitrate], heavy metals and mineral elements (arsenic, lead, zinc and copper) was investigated. This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the parameters of drinking water and the efficiency of a conventional home water treatment device (with osmosis purifier) in Rafsanjan in summer 2017. Water at the inlet and outlet of the device was sampled at 15 day intervals for three months (summer) and approximately 48 samples were collected. Then, the levels of elements copper and zinc, and heavy metals arsenic and lead, total hardness, EC, sodium and nitrate were measured in inlet and outlet water samples. The results showed that in the inlet water, the EC and pH values were in desired and standard ranges. The levels of arsenic and magnesium were measured at higher than the permissible limits and other parameters including total hardness, calcium, sodium, nitrate, copper; zinc and lead were lower than the desired and standard limits. The highest reduction efficiency was obtained for copper, zinc and arsenic (99%, 99%, and 86.7%, respectively), and the lowest reduction efficiency for nitrate and calcium (57% and 74%, respectively). Therefore, it can be argued that home water treatment devices are highly efficient to remove the physicochemical parameters of water. The devices could reduce the concentrations of the parameters up to those under the standard, which is not desirable. Due to the relationship between heart disease and light water, it is suggested that, in view of the high arsenic content in Rafsanjan water, filters be used to absorb heavy metals, especially arsenic, at the inlet municipal water.
