Weirs have widely been used for the flow measurement, flow diversion and its control in the open channels. Duckbill weir is kind of labyrinth weir which has more effective length led to more discharge. Determination the design criteria for the practical application of these weirs need more investigation. Weir angle and its position relative to the flow direction influence on the discharge coefficient.Duckbill weir is a kind of non-linear weirs which are used to control free flow passing over weirs in low width. In this study an extensive experiments were carried out in order to investigate the effect of duckbill weir geometry on the discharge coefficient. The variables were the height of weir, the angle of the weir and discharge. The discharge coefficients obtained from these experiments were then compared with the corresponding values obtained from the usual rectangular sharp crested weir experiments. Comparison of results showed that in all duckbill weirs with difference vertex angle, flow discharge coefficient had increasing trend with increase of relative effective head then decrease for > 0.3 due to collision of nape. The higher weir helped to improve discharge capacity. Also duckbill weirs have a better performance in comparison with sharp crested weir. |
