Analyzing the Components and Dimensions of Iran's Strategic Depth in West Asia
چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Introduction: Strategic depth, as a multidimensional concept, plays a pivotal role in formulating and implementing the foreign policies of states. This concept, encompassing geographical, military, economic, cultural, and political dimensions, enables governments to analyze the international environment, identify threats and opportunities, and adopt appropriate strategies to safeguard and advance their national interests. However, a critical question arises: What are the precise characteristics and components of this concept? Specifically, what roles do economic, cultural, and technological factors play in shaping strategic depth? A review of relevant literature reveals that while various studies have addressed different aspects of strategic depth, the predominant discourse still revolves around military considerations. Focusing on this concept—particularly through a traditional lens, as seen during the colonial era or the Cold War—may prove counterproductive, potentially exacerbating tensions and even lacking practical efficacy. Thus, it is imperative to recalibrate the dimensions of strategic depth in the contemporary era, aligning them with current spatiotemporal complexities and evolving geopolitical realities. This necessitates a shift from an overemphasis on hard power (military and territorial dominance) toward a more balanced integration of economic influence, technological innovation, cultural outreach, and diplomatic agility—elements that increasingly define strategic advantage in today’s interconnected world. In this context, Iran's geopolitical position in West Asia has gained particular significance given ongoing regional and international developments. With its extensive borders with neighboring countries, abundant energy resources, and influential historical-cultural legacy, Iran seeks to enhance its strategic depth in the region. Nation-states consider the expansion of spatial domains and strategic points within their peripheral spheres as one of the most crucial spatial requirements for developing security frameworks based on strategic factors. Iran regards portions of West Asia as constituting its strategic depth. Research Question: This introduction leads us to the following questions: What are the dimensions and components of Iran's strategic depth in West Asia, and what position does each of these components hold? More specifically, how do economic, cultural, and political components contribute to deepening Iran's strategic depth in this region? Results and discussion: This study presents a new definition of the concept of strategic depth and identifies its components in two categories: hardware and software. The hardware components include: economic relations with countries, military and defense power, scientific and technological power, presence in space and satellite technology, geopolitical position, transit position, geographical location, and control over strategic straits. The software components consist of: culture and cultural capacities, language, art, participation in regional and global alliances and treaties, religion and ideology, and universal discourse. Subsequently, considering these 14 components, a questionnaire was prepared and experts were surveyed about the position of each component in West Asia. The results ultimately showed that: the greatest impact on Iran's strategic depth in West Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean relates to geo-economic capacities and economic relations (4.00), military and defense power (3.97), and scientific and technological power (3.94). The least impact was associated with language (2.00), culture and cultural capacities (2.91), and universal discourses (2.91). In today's world, the concept of strategic depth has become one of the most pivotal subjects in national security and foreign policy. Given rapid geopolitical transformations and emerging threats, there is an urgent need for an updated definition and application of strategic depth. This study proposes a novel definition by examining 14 critical components (geographical, economic, military, human, cultural, and technological dimensions).Accordingly, the author's proposed definition is: "A geographical sphere that, through controlling processes and harnessing existing capacities within it, guarantees the survival and security of a nation's vital material and immaterial values." Conclusion: Based on the research findings and with emphasis on Iran's strategic depth in West Asia, it can be concluded that under current conditions, geo-economic factors, military power, and scientific-technological capabilities play decisive roles in enhancing Iran's strategic depth in the region. While the diminished importance of discourse and cultural/linguistic capacities might initially appear contradictory to the nature of Iran's foreign policy - which is fundamentally based on Islamic Revolutionary discourse and religious orientation - it is crucial to note that this relative decline does not necessarily imply neglecting these components. In reality, Iran can leverage its cultural and religious assets, particularly among Muslim communities in the region, to strengthen its strategic depth. However, to maximize impact, these traditional soft power elements must be synergistically combined with modern instruments of power, particularly economic and technological capabilities. This integrated approach would allow Iran to maintain its ideological distinctiveness while effectively navigating contemporary geopolitical realities in West Asia. Iran has successfully expanded its regional influence by leveraging the discourse of the Islamic Revolution and supporting resistance movements. However, to consolidate this influence, it must strengthen its economic foundations and scientific-technological capabilities. Simultaneously, the importance of cultural diplomacy and the use of soft power instruments should not be overlooked. Ultimately, a strategic integration of hard and soft power components—while remaining anchored in the values and ideals of the Islamic Revolution—will enable Iran to develop more comprehensive strategies. This approach will allow Iran to extend its sphere of influence across West Asia while safeguarding its national interests and ideological aspirations.
