Clinico-microbiological study of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci isolated from colonized and infected patients with special reference to risk factors |

چکیده انگلیسی مقاله |
Background: VRE has become a growing concern in healthcare settings as they are a major cause of many nosocomial infections worldwide Risk factors associated with VRE need to be studied in order to prevent the acquisition and spread of infection in health care settings. Aims: Present study was conducted to study the clinical spectrum, risk factors, and source of transmission of VRE in infected and colonized patients. Material and method: A prospective observational study was carried over a period of 1 year. Total 200 Enterococcus species isolated from clinical samples like urine, pus, blood, sterile body fluids were screened for vancomycin resistance by disc diffusion and macrobroth dilution method. Stool samples from 200 patients not suffering from any infection were screened for VRE colonization. Results: Vancomycin resistance was present in 7 (3.5%) out of 200 isolates of enterococci from clinical samples. Urinary tract infection (n = 5, 71.4%) was the most common clinical illness caused by VRE. Gut colonization was found in 12 (6%) out of 200 patients screened for VRE carriage. History of antibiotic exposure in the past was the significant risk factor found in the present study associated with VRE infection and colonization. Endogenous bloodstream infection caused by VRE was found in one patient with VRE colonization. Conclusion: Patients infected as well as colonized with VRE represents the actual burden of VRE. Inappropriate overuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria in health care settings |
